Die Art und Weise ist von Beruf zu Beruf, von Kunden zu Kunden verschieden. Das Grafikdesign kommt durch vielfдltige kьnstlerische und technische Mittel zum Einsatz, so wie zum Beispiel Printmedien, Film, Fernsehen, Video, Internet, Software und andere. Ein Grafikdesigner kann die verschiedensten Objekte entwerfen, sei es Logos, Visitenkarten, Posters, Werbung, Flyers, Kataloge, Bьchercovers, Cd-Covers oder einfache Einleidungen, die Mцglichkeiten und Entwurfe sind unbegrenzt! Aus diesem Grund kann man Grafikdesign nicht als Beruf festlegen, Grafikdesign ist ein allzu allgemeiner Begriff um damit nur ein Beruf zu bezeichnen. Woher stamm das Wort Grafikdesign und wann genau wurde es zum Kultwort unserer Gesellschaft? Grafikdesign als Begriff an sich wurde von William Addison Dwiggins geprдgt und definiert. Dies geschah um das Jahr 1922. William Addison Dwiggins wurde 19. Juni 1880 in Martinsville/Ohio und studierte an dem Frank Holme’s School of Illustration in Chicago. Zu Anfang seiner Karriere betrieb William Addison Dwiggins eine kleine Druckerei in Cambridge spдter wurde er als Werbegraphiker tдtig bis er letztendlich zum Leiter der Harvard University Press ernannt wurde. William Addison Dwiggins hat wдhrend seines Lebens den Begriff und die Auffassung des Grafikdesigns neu definiert. William Addison Dwiggins ist letztendlich am 25. Dezember 1956 in Hingham/Massachusetts gestorben. Zu Lebenszeiten von William Addison Dwiggins galt der Grafikdesign zur Berufung einer Person, die sich um ziemlich alles zu kьmmern hatte. Vorher waren Drucker, Typografen, Schriftsetzer, Grafiker und Designer oft ein und dieselbe Person. Alle Aufgaben rund ums Designern und Vermarkten wurde auf einer Person konzentriert. Heute sieht das ganze jedoch ganz anders aus. Das Grafikdesign hat sich in vielen verschiedenen Berufen gespalten und weiterentwickelt. Richtiger gesagt, ist heute sind Grafik-Design und Visuelle Kommunikation eine Untergruppe des Kommunikationsdesigns. Das klassische Grafikdesign beschrдnkt sich seit einigen Jahren nun nicht mehr nur auf das Gestalten von und mit grafischen Formen. Deshalb wird zunehmend der Begriff Kommunikationsdesign als ein Oberbegriff angenommen, der neben der Visuellen Kommunikation auch noch die Verbale und die Audiovisuelle Kommunikation beinhaltet. Die Berufsbezeichnung Grafikdesigner/-in ist heute nicht geschьtzt, ist jedoch eine Spezifizierung des Begriffs Designer.
