We visited Cape Town in South Africa to attend a wedding flying from Birmingham in England via Amsterdam to Cape Town with KLM. Our flight touched down late at night and we were driven by our friends to the first of two luxury hotels we had arranged to stay at for four nights in Cape Town:- THE CAPE HERITAGE HOTEL This luxury hotel in Cape Town is centrally located within walking distance of both the financial area of the city and the shops and parks. There are fifteen bedrooms. Our room was huge, beautifully furnished with a wonderful wooden floor and we could sit up in bed with a view of Table Mountain. This luxury hotel in Cape Town is owned by an Englishman who is most personable-nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was a delight served by the most friendly staff you could possibly meet. A lovely lounge to relax in with a drink in the evening. Although dinner is not served there are numerous excellent restaurants close by which the hotel can recommend-do not miss dining at L'Aubergine! The hotel will arrange a taxi for you if required - in a mercedez benz. You can be assured of a warm welcome at this luxury hotel in the middle of Cape Town and you will be well looked after during your stay. Enjoy! For the final two nights of our stay in Cape Town we moved a few miles into the exclusive suburbs of Cape Town to :- LES CASCADES DE BANTRY BAY This luxury hotel, actually described as a lodge, is located in a peaceful exclusive residential area of Bantry Bay. It is personally run and has six bedrooms in the main house all with balconies with views of the sea. The furnishings both in the bedroom and in the public areas are of the highest quality. The bathroom was luxurious. In The Villa, a separate building located within the grounds, there are four bedrooms designed in a contemporary style. The small swimming pools are beautiful with lovely seating areas to relax - candles lit on an evening. Breakfast was served outside overlooking one of the swimming pools. Dinner is also served but we did not dine at this luxury hotel. The staff are very attentive and personable at this small luxury hotel. Enjoy! Whilst we did not stay at The Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town we did have afternoon tea and what a memorable experience that was! We have had afternoon tea at many other luxury hotels but nothing has compared with that at The Mount Nelson Hotel. Do not miss the experience! Enjoy!

You can explore the island and discover all that it has to offer by way of shopping and other activities, or relax at the Cove Cafй too. Petit Jean State Park Situated near Little Rock in Arkansas, this is famous for being America's first State Park. With one hundred and twenty seven campsites and thirty-three cabins and camping equipment, which are available for renting, this is a very popular camping tour destination. There are numerous hiking trails, picnic spots, playgrounds and facilities for swimming on this wonderful Camping Park. For Welikit Family Campground With close proximity to the three lakes, this Camping site of South Dakota offers great attractions and facilities. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Mountain, Custer State Park's Buffalo caves and the many golf courses are just half an hour form this Campground. Facilities are available for horse camping on the several trails and for RV hook up. Cabins are available and so are sites for tents. Except inside the Cabins, pets are allowed everywhere. Propane is available for sale and trailers are also available for renting. Irrespective of the economic strata, Camping is number one holiday activity of the people of USA, according to the Travel Industry Association. The way in which adult Africans, and I believe many of the adults I've met in the resort areas of Mexico, have developed a high degree of spoken fluency is the same way in which we learned our native tongue as children—Passive Listening. If ever there was a "natural way" to learn a second language, this is it. If ever there was a way that one should use as the primary step to second language acquisition, this is it. Passive listening would be the direct opposite of how we are taught to approach the learning of math, history, or science. It is not the cramming, drilling, cold memorizing of facts, or mindless repetition of vocabulary words. It is, rather, the silent assimilation and consequent registering of sights, noises, smells, and action pictures within the new language. It is something that goes on even when a conscious effort is not being made to pay attention to things within the language. I know of one language school in the States that uses the Learnables products with children and suggests playing the tapes while the kids play and sleep. During the period of silence in which children say little in the new language and play a lot, passive listening is happening. There is no classroom in which a teacher is instructing the child in the language. The need to fit into play with the foreign children whose language must sound like gibberish at first is so great that lots of passive listening is happening. As adults, we have to engage in purposeful activity, one that is designed for massive exposure in the new language (acquisition first, learning second), as well as passive activity. I not only use home study courses that offer me "comprehensible input" in the language, but I watch lots and lots of television in Spanish. I thought I would write a follow-up to my column, “Move Over San Miguel de Allende Here I Come”, since this is the only thing, writing, that prevents from committing murderous acts of rage (Just Joking!) As you recall from the previous column, I wrote how I tried to deposit a royalty check from my publisher and was told the check would clear on four different dates. We were shown, last week, on their computer screen that the funds would be available on the 18th of December. Well, today is the 18th. We marched down to the bank and, of course, in the truest sense of TMO (Typical Mexican Operation) the funds were not available. We went into the bank so I could seize a bank officer and choke him (just kidding!). No, we talked to this guy who thought it cute to mumble at us. He actually told us something entirely new. He said that “the 18th” did not really mean “the 18th” but it meant sometime after 6 p. m. on the 18th but before mid-night on the 18th and…and…maybe even the 19th. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? This my dear readers is what we anal-retentive Americans (and “strung-tighter-than-piano wire Germans”) have to deal with when we become expatriates living in Mexico. It would seem, and I could be wrong, that Mexican banks just make up stuff as they go along. There are no policy manuals, procedural steps, no rules, just the “fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants” way of doing things. “Quй Serб, Serб: What ever will be, will be. The future’s not ours to see. Quй Serб, Serб.” This is exactly how things are done in central Mйxico. I have to tell you though, those from other regions of the country are as dumbfounded as I am. They tell me that this region of Mexico is “stuck in time and history.” They are provincial to the point of having been throw into a time loop and cannot escape the temporal hole they’ve been in since the middle ages. Time forgot central Mexico and no one seems to really care to crawl out of this dimensional morass in which they are quagmired. What are we going to do? I do not know. But, we are looking to other areas of Mexico that may not be like living in a Latino Twilight Zone. My fellow American expat said this: “That what Mexico needs is a Business Manager. These people need a Business Manager in everything that has to do with anything to show them how things work. This is because in all aspects of life, at least in Guanajuato, no one who does anything that has to do with something knows just how it is suppose to work.” She has no idea what truth she spoke!
